We are the Australian Government’s national authority on measurement. We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia’s measurement system. About the Chemical Reference Values (CRV) team

The Chemical Reference Values (CRV) team within the National Measurement Institute (NMI) comprises 16 scientists delivering proficiency testing (PT) services and producing reference materials (RMs) and reference values. The team applies routine methods to assess the homogeneity and stability of PT samples, alongside high-accuracy reference methods for the certification of matrix reference materials and the assignment of values to PT samples. A core responsibility of the team is the coordination and delivery of NMI’s chemical PT program.

This position reports to a Senior Scientist and contributes to the delivery of the PT program, which includes approximately 20 schemes per year across food, environmental, and illicit drug testing. The role involves supporting sample production and characterisation using routine methods, liaising with clients, and preparing detailed technical reports. It also requires maintaining quality and safety standards across all activities.

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate will have the following skills and capabilities

• A degree in chemistry or a related discipline
• Experience in analytical chemistry; good understanding of qNMR analysis is highly desirable
• Working knowledge of relevant quality standards eg ISO 17043, 17025
• Good understanding of statistics and evaluation of measurement uncertainty
• High level skills in MS Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Access
• High level communication skills, with demonstrated ability to prepare technical reports and deliver presentations

As the project scientist you will: 

• Assist in the organisation of individual PT rounds including:
  • Planning
  • Preparation of suitably homogeneous and stable PT samples
  • Communication with participants and coordination of logistical aspects including sample despatch and sourcing of relevant permits,
  • Data analysis including statistical evaluation and scoring,
  • Production of detailed technical reports, and
  • Client liaison.
• Perform homogeneity analysis and produce reference values for PT samples using qNMR , GCMS and LCMS.
• Assist with the introduction of new PT programs, and associated development activities, to enhance the scope of NMI’s program.
• Maintain measurement standards, quality systems and technical documentation in compliance with CRV accreditation requirements (ISO17043, ISO17025, ISO17034)
• Assist with stakeholder engagement and coordination of workshops
• Contribute to publications.

A degree in chemistry or a related discipline

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies for 18 months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Gazette.

Vaccination for Hepatitis A, B, and Tetanus is required for this position. NMI will provide vaccination for the successful applicant if required.

As this is a laboratory-based position, the successful candidate will be expected to work primarily on site. Ad hoc requests to work from home may be considered subject to operational requirements and manager approval.
