Assistant Director - Data Improvement & Analysis

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Director to join the Data Improvement and Analysis section.

This role is ideal for someone with strong project management and data analysis skills, who is curious and passionate about using data to improve outcomes for Australian workers. 

You will be able to harness data effectively to meet the information needs of a range of stakeholders and translate complex information into meaningful insights that inform decision-making.

You will work in a small and multi-disciplinary team, responsible for developing and leading national data projects to address priority work health and safety and workers’ compensation issues. Working closely with the Director, you will contribute to a broad range of data-related functions, including strategic data management, stakeholder engagement, collaboration across jurisdictions and sectors, and the communication of data and insights.

Collaboration is central to our work. You will engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to strengthen Australia’s evidence base on WHS and workers’ compensation and help drive better policy and regulatory outcomes. You will also contribute to a culture of innovation, continuous improvement and evidence-informed decision-making, identifying opportunities to enhance how we collect, manage and use data.

• Lead and manage projects that improve the quality, coverage, accessibility and value of data held by the Agency. 
• Identify and deliver new data initiatives that strengthen the evidence base on WHS and workers’ compensation, including strategies to address priority data and evidence gaps. 
• Apply sound data management practices across the data lifecycle to ensure data quality, integrity and fitness for purpose. 
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislative, policy and governance requirements, including privacy obligations when working with sensitive and personal information. 
• Communicate complex data and analytical findings clearly and effectively through a range of products, including reports, publications, presentations, fact sheets and digital content. 
• Build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities for new data, insights and innovation that support the Agency’s policy priorities. 
• Provide leadership within a collaborative team environment, including setting priorities, exercising initiative and supporting staff to deliver high-quality outcomes. 
• Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance data capability, processes and systems across the Agency.

• Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS), unless the Agency Head has agreed otherwise in writing.
• The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.
• Successful applicants will be required to complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.

People from a range of educational disciplines and work backgrounds would be able to succeed in this role. To be competitive, applicants should have a strong level of data literacy and well-developed project management and leadership skills. This includes the ability to apply statistical concepts and produce evidence for decision making. 

The following experience is not essential but will be highly regarded:

• Data analysis and/or data management qualifications or experience, including tertiary qualifications with a quantitative focus such as mathematical sciences, statistics, economics or epidemiology.
• Project management and data communication – project management and/or data communication experience, or relevant qualifications.
• Conceptual and critical thinking skills, including the ability to assess information and develop fit-for-purpose solutions.

This position can be filled by candidates working remotely under an agreed working arrangement negotiated with the Agency, subject to expectations on regular attendance in the main office (located in Canberra, ACT), staff development and performance management needs, and role suitability.
