The Climate Change Authority (the Authority) is an independent statutory agency of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water established by the Climate Change Authority Act 2011. The Authority’s purpose is to provide independent, evidence-based advice on Australia’s response to climate change, to:
- accelerate emissions reductions and position Australia as a leader in the global effort to limit temperature increases;
- guide Australia to new opportunities and new ways of doing things, to sustain Australia’s prosperity as the world transitions to net zero emissions; and
- help Australia prepare for and adapt to the current and increasing impacts of climate change, which have already begun and will continue to increase.
The Authority plays an important role in the governance of Australia's climate change policies including by providing independent advice on preparation of Australia’s annual climate progress statement to Parliament and Australia’s emissions reduction targets.
About this role

- engaging with stakeholders to strengthen the quality, relevance and credibility of what we bring to government, and
- helping shape Australia’s climate policy conversation towards a prosperous, resilient, net-zero future.
The Authority is required by legislation to consult publicly on all legislated advice it provides to the Australian Government. Stakeholder engagement and participation in the Authority’s work is fundamental to earning trust and navigating complexity.
The APS5 Engagement Officer plays a key role in planning and operationalising community outreach and engagement that supports the Authority’s purpose.
As an APS5 Engagement Officer reporting to the Assistant Manager, you will:
- Support implementation of the Authority’s Stakeholder Engagement Strategy.
- Coordinate and support stakeholder engagement activities, including workshops, roundtables, meetings, consultations and events.
- Support the public engagements of the CEO, Chair and Members.
- Manage engagement administration, including maintaining stakeholder records, coordinating invitations, tracking responses and supporting follow-up actions.
- Provide administrative and user support for the Authority's digital engagement platform, Converlens.
- Develop and coordinate communication products, including web content, stakeholder communication, presentations, publications and digital content.
- Contribute to monitoring, evaluation and reporting on communication and engagement activities, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Contribute to branch priorities and undertake other communication and engagement projects and activities as required.
Key capabilities and experience
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement and event coordination.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- The ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and manage competing priorities.
- Relevant tertiary education or proven industry experience in outreach/engagement, communications, public relations or events.
- Proven ability to work with diverse communities, including with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This role is Identified, which signifies the role has, or may have, involvement in matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
You will require cultural competency, including an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
In this role, cultural competency includes the ability to ensure that the Authority’s stakeholder engagement appropriately considers the perspectives, rights, knowledge and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Desirable qualifications/skills
- Experience in digital engagement platforms and tools.
- Experience working in a government or policy environment.
- Familiarity with climate change or environmental policy issues.
- Experience in monitoring and evaluating program performance, including compliance with national standards.
- Citizenship: to be eligible for employment with the Authority you must be an Australian citizen.
- Security clearance: this position requires an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) Baseline security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
- Pre-employment checks: your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, identity checks and referee checks.
Office Arrangements
The Authority’s primary office is located in Canberra, ACT.
For successful candidates, flexible working arrangements, including work from home, are available subject to operational requirements.
